“Much more than pure performance”
After 10 years of competing in Enduro at a professional level in Italy and Europe, Maurizio Gerini needed new motivations. In 2017 he switched to rally raid, racing and winning the Italian Moto Rally Championship and making his debut on his first International Rally, the Afriquia Merzouga Rally, where he finished 18th and the PanAfrica Rally. Motorbikes Racing as always been in his DNA since his father was a motocross and endurance rider. Talented for football and cycling since he was kid, he finally decided to become a professional rider. Dakar Rally has always been the ultimate adventure, the place to be, but Maurizio wanted to prepare it well. Finally all the pieces have come in the place and the Italian will make his debut with the Team Solaris, based in Castiglion Fiorentino, home town of Dakar legend Fabrizio Meoni. From Franco Gerini, the team principal, all the mechanics and team staff were following Fabrizio in his adventures. For this reason, the return on the Dakar Rally in South America is for the whole team a great event.
“I grew up with the myth of the Dakar. The first memory? The cover of my school notebooks with the racing cars and motorbikes competing in the Dakar. I also remember the highlights in TV. I have always loved off road racing and after 10 years of professional Enduro, I finally switched to rally raid. I love this discipline because is much more than pure performance, it's also adventure, challenge, strategy and full concentration and all this in a special environment: amazing landscapes and thousands of miles from home. I have arrived to the Dakar step by step and this year I have trained well.
My first International rally was the Merzouga Rally 2017. I didn't push in that occasion because I preferred to study the terrain and the navigation. When I returned in Morocco for the PanAfrica, I was much more comfortable with the sand dunes riding and the navigation. I produce the famous olive oil from Imperia. Regarding my debut on the Dakar in occasion of the 40th edition will be really special, plus with a team based in Castiglione Fiorentino, continuing the foot prints and passion of Fabrizio Meoni”.
