“Consistency is the key”
Alessandro Botturi is ready for his 7th Dakar participation always with the Yamaha colours, supported by Yamaha Europe and Yamaha Italy. The Italian arrives at the most important appointment of the year well prepared, after having competed in several rallies in Morocco, covering more than 3,000 km in the last months. Once again he will be one of the top riders of the Italian squad and Botturi is aware of this role as Italian ambassador. Since he made his debut in the sport as a pro, in fact, he has often wore the Maglia Azzurra, representing Italy in the rugby, his first passion, when he was competing in the rugby junior national team, and then in the enduro where he stood out with 15 ISDE participations and 12 World Championship seasons including 4 wins. His debut on the Dakar in 2012 was very promising: 8th place and best rookie. The result of the following years don't respect the potential of the Italian rider. In 2013 he showed to be very fast on the Husqvarna but he had to retire for a blown engine when he was 5th in the standing with only 2 days to the end. The following year another retirement due to a clutch problem after two stages. With Cyril Despres taking on the Peugeot challenge, Bottturi was offered a place in the Yamaha factory team in 2015, which shows how talented the rider is. Unfortunately his race was over on the Uyuni salt lake in 2015 due to an engine failure, while last year his race was compromised by a crash at the second stage. He suffered a fracture to his right wrist but he heroically continued till the 10th stage, when mechanical problem on his Yamaha obliged him to retire. 2016 Italian Raid TT Champion Botturi tackled the Dakar 2017 with determination but an incident on stage 4 obliged him to withdrawn.
"I'm really happy to start this new adventure as a rider supported by Yamaha but in a private team. This allows me to focus on myself without feeling too much pressure. I have prepared very well the Dakar, covering only in the last month more than 3,000 km in the dunes in Morocco competing in the Pan Africa, Morocco Rally but also during some training sessions. The 40th edition of the Dakar will be very tough. We will start with the dunes of Peru. I know this region from my first Dakar in 2012. My target is to finish the race. Consistency is the key and I'm sure that if I do and intelligent race and I don't make mistakes, I can get a good final result. The Dakar is a personal challenge: I train all the year for this unique event. After having achieved very good results in the Enduro (10 Italian titles, won 2 ISDE and finished 3 times third in the world enduro championship) and claimed the victory of two important international rallies like Sardinia and Merzouga, I'm determined to do well on the Dakar. This year I expect a technical and navigated race, where the input of Marc Coma is more visible and I'm ready for it. Navigation is one of my strong points, together with team spirit, that has always characterized my career”.
