“Nothing bigger than the Dakar…”

Richard Fliter is a man of challenges. Challenges in his every day working life. Challenges in sports that took him to participate in triathlon races. A bike enthusiast for as long as he can remember there was no challenge bigger than the Dakar and that's why the Brazilian will be sitting on his Honda CRF 450 at the start of the next rally in Asuncion. Part of the Taguatur Team alongside biker Ricardo Martins and quad specialist Marcelo Medeiros, Richard's only goal is to reach the finish in Buenos Aires. After competing in two editions of the famous Dos Sertoes rally on home soil, the 29-year-old focused a full year on preparing for the Dakar and made the best the precious tips of former Brazilian Dakar rider Jean De Azevedo (5th in 2003).

“My passion for bikes started when I was born (he laughs). My dad actually gave me a bike when I was 2. I then competed in all sorts of enduro, cross-country and Baja races. Why the Dakar? Because it's the last one on my list. There's nothing bigger. I like setting challenges in life. The Dakar isn't only riding a bike. It's also a mental and physical challenge. It involves so many things. When I decided to go for it, I spent an entire year preparing and training. The Dakar is very time consuming. I spoke with former riders like Jean De Azevedo and that helped a lot. I have no real fears. I mainly worry about having a mechanical problem that I can't repair. The navigation is also a major issue because it'll be the first time I really have to navigate in a rally. I don't want to race. I don't want to go too fast, just ride carefully. The most important thing for me is to reach the finish. The only pleasure will be to finish every stage and do so all the way to Buenos Aires.”
