“The perfect time for me”

Matt first got interested in rally raid while helping out mates racing on the Australian Safari and finally got round to entering the event himself in 2014 – the last year the race was run. Although he didn't make it to the final finish line, ‘thanks' to mechanical problems, he did manage to win a stage and knew then he had to take it further. With no domestic event left for him to race, in 2015 he set off to Dubai for the Desert Challenge and finished an impressive 8th overall, on a borrowed bike (after his failed to turn up in time) and with no previous dune riding experience. After such a performance, competing against the world's best, the Dakar was the logical next step…

“I've reached a time in my life, as far as work and family commitments are concerned, where there is a window of opportunity to enter the Dakar. It would probably be better if I had a few more rallies under my belt but it isn't easy getting the experience when you live in Australia and now is the perfect time for me. Like everyone else, my first goal is to finish, but I'd like to think I will be able to run with the better privateer riders. Motorcycle racing is always going to be a selfish sport, so to offset that a little I'll be riding for an Australian charity, Soldier On, just as I did on my two previous rallies. They help wounded servicemen and their families, it is something I believe in and want to support. Hopefully while I'm out there in the desert enjoying myself I'll also be able to raise some money for the charity and bring attention to a worthy cause.”
