“Still hard to believe !”
If Italy is looking for a promising rider, Alessandro Ruoso is one of the candidates. After winning the Italian Baja 2015, the 2-time Baja World Champion (2013- 2014) decided to make a switch in his career and focus on a bigger challenge: the Dakar. The preparation started with the Afriquia Merzouga Rally in May 2016, where he made his debut in the rally raid discipline. Despite it was the first time he was riding in the desert with a road book, he finished 15th. What can we expect from this fast and determined rider on the Dakar?
“I'm 35 years old and I ride since I was 3. And the Dakar has always been my dream. When I was a kid, I was watching the race in Africa. Edi Orioli and Fabrizio Meoni were my reference. Now that is my turn, it is still hard to believe that I will be part of this great adventure. Thanks to the support of KTM, Heinz Kinigadner and his son Hanes I can count on the support of a very professional team, the Orlen squad. This is crucial when you tackle a competitive and long race like the Dakar. From my side, I'm new to this discipline and I still need to gain more experience. I'm currently at my 70% of my potential. I need to improve the navigation. This is the difficult part of the rally: opening the throttle while you are reading the notes! I'm training every day before and after the work. It's a sacrifice. On the Dakar I want to make an intelligent race and finish with a good result. I have a clear and ambitious target in my mind, but it will be the time sheets to speak. I know it will be a tough race, but it will be the same challenge for everybody. The level of starting grid is getting higher every year and the competition is certainly with the other riders, but it will be especially with my mind, my endurance, where physical and mental strength must be optimised to the maximum”.
