“On the last Dakar I lost 10 kilos!”
“I'm happy that I have been a sort of ambassador in the Malle Moto class. When I started we were only 2 Italian, this year we will be five!” Diocleziano Toia is ready for his 4th Dakar, the third in the malle moto category. He made his debut in the 2014 in the team of Franco Picco, his reference in the 80's when he was watching the Dakar on TV. After the first experience, Toia decided to return in this special category without assistance. The idea came first because of a budget issue, but then it represented a true challenge. Last year he finished 4th despite he crashed and broke the femur, the tibia plate and the cruciate. His target for the 2017 Dakar is clear: trying to win the malle moto.
“Rallies have always been in my blood, first I raced with cars on a national level and then I started to do the Italian Motorally and then International rally raids in Egypt and Sardinia. I discovered in fact that with the same budget I was spending with cars I could compete by bike in much more important races. Racing Dakar is a project that occupies my mind the whole year: from the preparation to the training to finding sponsors to cover the budget. My idea is to do several Dakar in a row, like this is a constant training, then we will see. If you stop, you are lost, I say to myself, especially in the malle moto, my speciality. When you are an amateur rider, in fact, you cannot aim at a good result as you cannot compete with the pro and the factory riders. In the Malle Moto, on the contrary, every rider can race with equal weapons and this is the fascination. This class embodies the spirit of the true Dakar, because you don't have any assistance and when you finally reach the bivouac after a long stage, you need to start to work on the bike as mechanic. Maybe because of my work (he is a truck driver for racing horse), I'm not scared to lose sleeping hours or to be extremely tired. In this category you need to eat and sleep when it is possible. On the last Dakar I lost 10 kilos! I crashed several times and despite the injuries I could finish. Now I'm fully recovered. I aim at winning it and writing my name in the pages of the golden book of the Dakar Rally. I know it won't be easy because Jurgen Van den Goorbergh, winner of the 2016 edition, will be also at the start and there are several strong riders like Manuel Lucchese or Lyndon Poskitt and even Franco Picco”.
